The first major assignment in my latest class, Constructing Messages and Audience was to complete a book review from a list of predetermined books. My choice, Putting the Public Back in Public Relations: How Social Media is Reinventing the Aging Business of PR by industry veterans Brian Solis and Deidre Breakenridge takes a stab at restoring the art of public relations to is lost glory. Public relations has long since left a sour taste in the mouths of consumers and even journalists and communications professionals everywhere. The tales of spinning stories and tricking the public have left the industry with no choice but to adapt and evolve. The authors suggest that a mixture of personalization and social media is the key to reinventing the practice of modern-day public relations. Though it sounds naive and even simple, it is a task that actually requires a great deal of growth and humility. Solis and Breakenridge break down the barriers and offer scenarios and tools to aid PR professionals in changing the game they have made a living playing. A pleasant read overall, Solis and Breakenridge take hard to pin subject and make it easily understood and worth the time invested.
